Cartoon Trompe l’Oeil

A fashion installation

The project takes as its starting point early animations and their imaginary worlds, in which absolutely anything can happen. The films’ black-and-white technology, with its clear contours and sharp contrasts, forms a scaled-down imitation of reality.

The aim is to transfer the simple expressive content of the films to a clothes collection in order to create a collision between the imagination and reality. Drawing/illustrating by hand on garments gives the materials life, and using illusory details the feeling of the films becomes tangible in real life.

The resultant expressive content can also be linked to the technique of trompe l’oeil (French = deception of the eye). It is a way of creating the depth and the optical illusions used in painting, architecture and fashion.

I intend to create fashion wear for an alternative reality, and simultaneously investigate whether clothes and fashion can contribute towards stimulating the human imagination.
